The origins of Lager beer

Lager beer has its origins in 19th-century Bavaria. In this southern German region, the name "Lager," meaning "store," refers to the method of storing this bottom-fermenting beer in cool cellars for a prolonged fermentation period. The specific 'Lager' yeast strains used thrive at lower temperatures, resulting in a unique, clear and pure beer. Characteristic of Lager beer is its golden color, full body and slight bitterness.

Later in the 19th century, brewers in what is now the Czech Republic also began brewing Lager beers, resulting in Pilsener, a lighter and brighter Lager variant. The success of Lager and Pilsener in Europe led to their global spread. Today, these bottom-fermenting beers are brewed and enjoyed all over the world.

The brewing process of this fresh beer

Brewing Lager beer begins by combining water, malt (usually barley) and hops, then heating this mixture to extract the sugars from the malt. This results in a sweet liquid called "wort. The wort is then cooled and added to yeast, a crucial part of the brewing process. This 'Lager' yeast thrives at low temperatures, usually between 7 and 13 degrees Celsius, and converts the sugars in the wort into alcohol and carbon dioxide.

To lower the alcohol content, brewers use several methods, including brewing with special yeast strains that produce less alcohol, diluting the beer after fermentation, or employing a method called dealcoholization. Dealcoholization involves heating the low-fermentation beer after fermentation to evaporate the alcohol, or filtering it to remove the alcohol. The latter two methods must be done carefully to preserve the flavor of the beer.

Difference Lager and Pilsner

Lager is a broad category of beer made with a specific type of yeast that works best at lower temperatures and results in a clean, crisp beer with a light to medium body. Pilsner, on the other hand, named after the city of Plzen in the Czech Republic, is a specific type of Lager with a lighter color and a distinct hop flavor. Pilsners are characterized by their bright, golden color and refreshing, sometimes floral taste and is the most widely consumed beer in the world. Pilsner, unlike Lager beer, has a warm fermentation. Essentially, all Pilsners are Lagers, but not all Lagers are Pilsners.
