The difference with beer without alcohol

Alcohol-free beer and low-alcohol beer, while similar, do have some differences. An alcohol-free beer contains no or very little alcohol, usually less than 0.5 alcohol. In contrast, low-alcohol beer has a lower alcohol content than traditional beer, but usually contains slightly more than 0.5 alcohol. Although most alcohol-free beers can also be called low-alcohol beers, not all low-alcohol beers are necessarily alcohol-free.

The three different brewing methods

The art of brewing low-alcohol beers lies in the specific techniques used to reduce alcohol content without sacrificing flavor. There are three primary methods: yeast, distillation and membrane filter.

Yeast

In the fermentation method, breweries use a special strain of yeast that produces less alcohol during the brewing process. This results in a fresh beer with a lower alcohol content, but with the full flavor of traditional beer.

Distillation

Distillation involves heating the beer after brewing to evaporate the alcohol while retaining the rich flavors.

Diaphragm filter

and finally, there is the membrane filtration method, where alcohol is filtered out of the beer using a special membrane, resulting in a nonalcoholic beer that retains its authentic beer flavor.
