What is fruit beer?
Fruit beer is a type of beer brewed with the addition of fruit, such as raspberries, cherries, peaches or apricots. The fruit is usually added during the brewing process or during a secondary fermentation, bringing the flavors and aromas of the added fruit into the beer. Fruit beer can range in color from light to dark and can have either quite sweet or sour flavors. It is popular in Belgium and the Netherlands and is often drunk as a refreshing alternative to traditional beer. Many modern breweries today have their own fruit beer.
The brewing process of fruit beer
The brewing process of fruit beer is not much different from the brewing process of other beer. First, malt and hops are added to hot water to extract sugars and flavorings. After boiling, the brew is cooled and yeast is added to convert the sugars to alcohol.
When brewing fruit beer, fruit is added to the beer during boiling or after primary fermentation. The fruit can be fresh or frozen and is often added in the form of pulp, syrup or juice. The fruit aromas and flavors are incorporated into the beer and give it its characteristic fruity flavor and aroma.
Some brewers add additional fruit during secondary fermentation to enhance the fruity character. After the second fermentation, the beer is often filtered and bottled or tapped to mature. The final result is a fruity beer with a unique fruity flavor and aroma, depending on the type of fruit used.
The brewing process of alcohol-free fruit beer is similar to that of regular fruit beer, with the important difference being that the alcohol content is reduced or removed. In most cases, the alcohol is removed by distillation or evaporation after fermentation
Difference fruit beer and cherry
Cherries are beers brewed with only cherry. Fruit beers are brewed with multiple fruits. Fruit beer brewers experiment with apple, pineapple, lime and many more fruits. This is the major difference between fruit beers and kriek. In addition, Kriek has higher acidity than fruit beers. This is because of the sour cherries that are added to the beer.
