NEIPA beer
NEIPA is relatively young among specialty beers. In fact, this style was only recognized in 2015! However, NEIPA has made a stunning impression. Partly due to the advent of this New England IPA, specialty beers have become much more accessible to new drinkers. Despite NEIPA not being a major category within non-alcoholic and low-alcohol beers, this style has had a major impact on the development of specialty beers.
What is NEIPA beer?
In the low-alcohol New England IPA (or NEIPA), the hops are not added until near the end of the boil, making this beer deliciously fruity. Like NEIPA with alcohol, low-alcohol NEIPA is cloudy. The beer is not filtered and therefore appears almost like a fruit juice, unlike session IPA and double IPA, for example.
A NEIPA may be reminiscent of an Indian Pale Ale (IPA). The difference between the NEIPA and the IPA is primarily in the bitterness. Whereas many IPA beers are known for their hop bitterness, the NEIPA places much less emphasis on this. Instead, the NEIPA is known for its fruity aromas and soft fruity taste with a very slightly bitter finish.
The origins of New England IPA
The fruity character of the New England IPA originated in the far northeastern United States. Specifically, the brewing of NEIPA originated in the state of Vermont, which otherwise doesn't have a whole lot going on. This region is better known as New England, hence this new beer style is called the New England IPA.
In terms of color, this style of beer ranges between pale gold and amber to orange-like. Oats and/or lactose may have been used during the brewing process, giving a NEIPA the creamy mouthfeel.
Packed with flavor and fruity aromas
Alcohol-free NEIPAs are beers that usually have a cloudy, smooth and fruity taste with a low bitterness level. They often have aromas of tropical fruits, citrus, peach, apricot, and sometimes herbal or floral notes.
NEIPAs are brewed with lots of hops, mainly later in the brewing process, making them less bitter than traditional IPAs. This gives NEIPAs a smoother mouthfeel and a fruitier character, which can sometimes feel almost juicy.
The flavor and aromas of NEIPAs can vary depending on the hop varieties used, the brewing process and the malts used. If you do want something more bitter, try a non-alcoholic IPA.

New England IPAs typically have a fruity, hoppy flavor that pairs well with foods that also have a strong flavor. Fatty dishes such as burgers, pizza, fried chicken or spicy foods often pair well with NEIPAs because the hoppy flavors help balance out the fats and spice. Also, dishes with citrus and tropical fruits such as sushi, ceviche and salsas can pair well with the fruity notes in NEIPAs. It is also a good choice to pair with spicy Mexican food or Thai green curry.
