About the brewer
In 1994, a state-of-the-art brewery was installed in the front buildings of the medieval Ter Dolen castle in Helchteren, Belgium.
Today's Ter Dolen Castle (De Dool) in Helchteren dates back to the 16th century, but its history goes much further back in time. It served in the Middle Ages as a summer residence and later as a refugia house for the abbots of the Abbey of St. Truiden. The first mention goes back to 1282. The castle had an eventful history over the centuries. Until the middle of the 15th century, the castle regularly served as a refuge, was the cause of conflicts and was repeatedly destroyed and burned down. After the French Revolution, it was sold to private individuals and later housed a school. During the war, German soldiers stayed there. As of 1977, the castle was uninhabited and fell into disrepair. At the end of 1993, Mieke Desplenter bought the castle and started renovation works. In July 1994, the Ter Dolen brewery opened its doors to great acclaim.
The brewery contains six cylindrical stainless steel yeast and lagering tanks. The brew kettle has a capacity of 25 hectoliters per brew. Since 2013, the brewery has its own bottling plant and a new warehouse with hot room, so the brewery is able to brew and fill all its beers in-house.
