About the brewer
Brouwerij 't IJ has been brewing quirky Amsterdam specialty beers since 1985. Musician Kasper Peterson founded the company after becoming acquainted with Belgian beer styles.
As a member of the band Door Mekaar, he performed regularly in Belgium and developed an above-average interest in the beer of his southern neighbors. Because similar specialty beer was hardly brewed in the Netherlands yet, he decided to do it himself.
The beer he initially brewed still in a squat soon caught on. Looking for a larger location, he stumbled upon the vacant Funen Municipal Bathhouse. A building with an extensive water supply and drainage system and a steam generator, it was ideal for brewing. Adjacent mill De Gooyer is not part of the property but has served as the ultimate landmark since the beginning.
Not long after brewing began, the bathhouse also had its own tasting room and patio. Because the brewery on Funenkade could no longer meet the demand for IJ beer, we opened a second location in January 2013.
In 2015, Brouwerij 't IJ and Duvel Moortgat partnered for support in areas such as brewing technology and distribution as well as financial clout.
